About Philips Lifeline
Lifeline Systems was founded by psychologist and gerontologist Dr. Andrew S. Dibner, PhD. In 1972, while on sabbatical at Duke University in North Carolina, Dr. Dibner wondered: “What would an elderly person do if he or she were alone but needed help?” The question fascinated him, the idea of helping others inspired him, and the possibility of finding a solution motivated him. He fully dedicated himself to discovering an answer. Two years later, Dr. Dibner patented his ideas and technology, and Lifeline Systems was born.
In its early years, Lifeline Systems marketed and sold its services primarily through hospitals and other healthcare facilities as a community service. This delivery system gave hospitals a positive community image while simultaneously helping at-risk populations feel more comfortable about living alone or independently.
As the company grew and technology advanced, Lifeline Systems branched out, began selling its services to individuals as well as healthcare professionals, and continuously innovated to deliver first-in-class solutions to its subscribers.
In 2006, Philips acquired Lifeline Systems, changed the name to Philips Lifeline, and added the company to its respected line of home healthcare solutions.
Today, Philips Lifeline remains the #1 medical alert service in the United States, having served over 7 million subscribers, and it continues to lead the industry in providing meaningful innovations like Lifeline with AutoAlert. Its spirit and mission to help individuals and families lead more comfortable, confident lives carries on. Philips Lifeline is headquartered at 111 Lawrence Street in Framingham, Massachusetts.
